Where's Elmer Fudd when you need him? The MelonMan captures an intruder in the patch!

The hot weather has really come fast this season to the Missouri Bootheel. The rains are giving the plants all the nourishment they need and they are really growing fast. Infact, they are almost DOUBLING in size with each passing day. Up here in Sikeston, we see quite alot of tornados and severe thunderstorms. If we can dodge severe weather this year our hefty goal of a 300 pound melon might be realized.

One morning I was out the melon patch, checking on the melon's progress, when my eyes caught this intruder into the patch. I scrambled like a teenager (at my age, that's getting harder every day!) to humanely capture the varmint. Here's a picture of him...and even though he's not very big, he can still do more than enough damage - especially if he brings friends. Tighter animal security is an absolute must for our season to be a success.

Tina quickly wisked the "wascally wabbit" away to our good neighbors, Phil and Janet Lyon, who quickly gave the loveable pest a new home. Hopefully, Phil's lush lettuce patch will keep Baby Bugs' appetite in check and give my melons some peace and quiet!
